“A Mangaka’s Road to Japan” ended!

Chapter 11, the final chapter, of A Mangaka’s Road to Japan was published last Friday, February 13th. It was a short series, but I learned so much from creating it, as it was the first time I both wrote the story and drew the art for a manga series. As with Matagi Gunner, I can’t forget to thank my editors and my assistant for helping shape the series into what readers ultimately experienced. As I mentioned in one of the chapters, making manga in Japan is truly a team effort.

I received quite a few questions and saw several comments online about the series, so I’ll try to answer some of them here.

As I mentioned before, the series was intentionally short. Its length, 11 chapters, was decided even before I drew the first line of the storyboard for chapter 1. Some readers may already know this, but Kodansha asked me to create A Mangaka’s Road to Japan as part of an initiative called Kodansha Manga Academy, which aims to attract overseas mangaka to work in Japan. My story, how I managed to draw Matagi Gunner for Morning magazine, serves as an example of what they hope to achieve with many other non-Japanese creators. They asked me to share my experience and highlight what I believe is important for Western mangaka to understand about working in the Japanese manga industry.

I realize that for Japanese readers, the series appeared on Comic DAYS like any other regular serialization, so reaching the ending after only 11 chapters may have come as a surprise. However, this was a special project from the very beginning, not a standard long-term serialization like Matagi Gunner.

As a result, the series was never meant to be a comprehensive retelling of my entire journey. Instead, it was designed as a collection of tips, advice, and sometimes honest warnings for Western mangaka, so they know what to expect if they succeed in working with a Japanese publisher. That’s also why there are significant time jumps between chapters in the second half of the series.

Another point worth mentioning is that we aimed to make the series half educational and half entertaining, all within just 10 to 12 pages per chapter. That was more challenging than I expected. While writing, I found myself focusing heavily on the entertainment aspect, whereas Kodansha wanted to ensure the educational value came through clearly as well. We worked hard to strike the right balance between the two, and although it required some back and forth, I believe we achieved that balance in every chapter.

Lastly, a few Japanese readers have asked whether A Mangaka’s Road to Japan will be collected into a volume in the future. As of now, Kodansha has no plans to release a collected edition. I don’t know if that may change, but for the time being, the only way to read the series in Japanese is through the Comic DAYS app. In English, it is available on K Manga and the Kodansha Manga Academy website. The good news is that the entire series can be read for free.

『A Mangaka’s Road to Japan』第11話、そして最終話が、2月13日（金）に公開されました。短い連載ではありましたが、今回の作品はシリーズとして初めて原作と作画の両方を自分で担当したこともあり、本当に多くのことを学ぶことができました。『Matagi Gunner』のときと同様に、この作品を読者の皆さんにお届けできる形にまで一緒に作り上げてくださった編集者の方々とアシスタントには、改めて感謝を伝えたいです。作中でも書きましたが、日本で漫画を作るというのは本当にチーム作業です。

連載について、オンラインでいくつか質問やコメントをいただきましたので、ここでいくつかお答えしたいと思います。

以前にもお話ししましたが、本作は最初から短期連載として企画されたものでした。全11話という構成も、第1話のネームを描く前の段階で決まっていました。すでにご存じの方もいるかもしれませんが、本作は講談社マンガアカデミー（Kodansha Manga Academy）という取り組みの一環として、講談社からご依頼をいただいて制作した作品です。これは海外の漫画家に日本で活躍してもらうことを目的としたプロジェクトで、私が『Matagi Gunner』を『モーニング』で連載するに至った経緯は、まさにその一つのモデルケースでもあります。日本の漫画業界で働くうえで、西洋の漫画家に知っておいてほしいことを、自分の経験を通して伝えてほしいという依頼でした。

日本の読者の方にとっては、Comic DAYSに他の通常連載と同じように掲載されていたため、11話で完結したことに驚かれたかもしれません。しかし本作は当初から特別企画であり、『Matagi Gunner』のような長期連載とは性質の異なる作品でした。

そのため、このシリーズは自分の人生をすべて網羅的に描くことを目的としたものではありません。むしろ、日本の出版社で仕事を得ることができた場合に何が待っているのかを知ってもらうための、ヒントやアドバイス、そして時には率直な注意点をまとめた作品です。後半に大きな時間の飛躍があるのも、そのためです。

もう一つお伝えしたいのは、各話10～12ページという限られたページ数の中で、「教育的な側面」と「エンターテインメント性」の両立を目指していたという点です。これは想像以上に難しい作業でした。執筆中、私は物語として面白くすることに意識が向きがちでしたが、講談社側は情報性や学びの要素もしっかり伝わるようにしたいと考えていました。何度もやり取りを重ねながらバランスを探り、最終的には各話でその両立ができたのではないかと思っています。

最後に、日本の読者の方から「単行本化の予定はありますか？」というご質問をいくつかいただきました。現時点では、講談社に単行本化の予定はありません。今後どうなるかは分かりませんが、現在日本語で読む方法はComic DAYSアプリのみとなっています。英語版はK Mangaおよび講談社マンガアカデミーのウェブサイトで読むことができます。嬉しいことに、全話無料で公開されています。
