My new series is out! “A Mangaka’s Road to Japan”

After several months of work, my new series for Kodansha has finally been released! It’s called “A Mangaka’s Road to Japan,” an autobiographical essay that tells the story of how I went from working as an inker for DC Comics to drawing manga in Japan for Kodansha.

The series is short and was created to help promote the new Kodansha Manga Academy, a website designed to recruit and support foreign mangaka who aspire to make manga in Japan. Initially, the plan was to publish the series exclusively on that website—check it out here:

My editors at Kodansha first approached me about drawing A Mangaka’s Road to Japan a few months before Matagi Gunner ended—around January 2025, if I remember correctly. At first, it was planned as a one-shot of about 30 to 40 pages, but as we realized how much material we wanted to include, the format evolved into a short series of several 10-page chapters.

After I finished the first few chapters, the editorial team thought the story might also interest Japanese readers, so they decided to translate it into Japanese and publish it on Comic Days. It’s now available on Kodansha’s K Manga app, Comic Days, and the Kodansha Manga Academy website.

From the start, I was very excited to work on this project. I’d wanted to write and draw my own series for a long time, and this felt like the perfect opportunity. It’s also a deeply personal story that only I can tell, so I couldn’t pass up the chance.

In preparation, I spent months studying Kishōtenketsu storytelling and analyzing my favorite manga to make sure I was ready to write strong stories. I’m happy to say that writing turned out to be much less painful than I expected. I had feared getting stuck or running out of ideas, but that never happened. I’m very proud of the story we created and of how it manages to be both entertaining and educational. The goal of the series, after all, is to inspire non-Japanese artists to follow a similar path—to try publishing their own manga in the Japanese market.

As I write this, the scripts are complete, and I’m currently drawing the final chapters. Creating A Mangaka’s Road to Japan has been incredibly fun, and now I’m not even sure which I enjoy more—writing or drawing. The first three chapters have already been released, and the response has been fantastic. I’m especially pleased by how interested Japanese readers are in seeing the manga industry through the eyes of a foreign creator.

数か月にわたる制作を経て、ついに僕の新連載が講談社から公開されました！

タイトルは**『A Mangaka’s Road to Japan（マンガ家への道：日本編）』**。

この作品は、DCコミックスでインカーとして働いていた僕が、どうやって講談社で漫画を描くようになったのか――その道のりを描いた自伝的エッセイです。

このシリーズは短編で、講談社が立ち上げた新サイト 「Kodansha Manga Academy」 の紹介・応援を目的に制作されました。

このサイトは、「日本で漫画を描きたい」という海外の漫画家志望者をサポートするために作られたものです。

講談社の編集さんからこの企画のお話をいただいたのは、『マタギガンナー』の連載終了の少し前――たしか2025年1月ごろだったと思います。

当初は30〜40ページほどの読切として構想されていましたが、描きたいことがどんどん増えていき、最終的には1話10ページ前後の短期連載に変更されました。

そして、最初の数話を仕上げた段階で、編集部から「日本の読者にも読ませたい」という提案があり、日本語版をComic Daysでも連載することが決まりました。

現在は K MANGAアプリ、Comic Days、そして Kodansha Manga Academy のサイトで公開中です。

この企画をいただいたときから、本当にワクワクしていました。

ずっと「自分の作品を描きたい」と思っていたので、これは絶好のチャンスだと感じたんです。

しかも、これは僕にしか描けない、とてもパーソナルな物語。逃すわけにはいきませんでした。

制作に入る前には、何か月もかけて起承転結の物語構成を研究したり、お気に入りの漫画を分析したりして、しっかり準備をしました。

正直、執筆はもっと大変かと思っていましたが、思っていたよりもずっとスムーズに進みました。

ネタが尽きるんじゃないかと不安もありましたが、そんなことはまったくありませんでした。

物語としてもエッセイとしても満足のいく仕上がりになり、とても誇りに思っています。

このシリーズの目的は、何よりも「日本で漫画を描いてみたい」と思っている海外のクリエイターたちに、挑戦するきっかけを与えることです。

この記事を書いている今、脚本はすべて完成し、最終話の作画を進めているところです。

『A Mangaka’s Road to Japan』を描くのは本当に楽しくて、今では「描くのと書くの、どっちが好きなんだろう？」と自分でもわからなくなるほどです。

すでに第1〜3話が公開されていて、反応もとても好評です。

特に、日本の読者が「外国人の目から見た日本の漫画業界」に強く興味を持ってくれているのが、すごく嬉しいです。
