Finally, my new manga series has begun! It's called 極北天獄～Escape from the Far North～, and I'm responsible for the artwork while Kouta Matsuda writes the story. The series is published on Shogakukan's Manga ONE.
As I write this, chapters 1 and 2 have already been released, and it looks like the reception has been quite good so far! Thank you so much to everyone who has given our manga a chance. I hope you'll continue reading as new chapters are published!
Judging by some of the readers' comments, many people already know that this story is based on real people and real events that took place during Japan's Edo period. You can find the basics of the story online, so if you want to avoid spoilers, I would recommend not Googling the main character's name!
Needless to say, we've done a lot of research to portray the world of this story as accurately as possible. Of course, I know we're probably going to make some mistakes along the way, so I hope readers will forgive us if they spot the occasional historical inaccuracy. All I can say is that Matsuda-san, our editor, my assistants, and I are constantly searching for images and information online for every chapter, doing our best to recreate the Edo period as faithfully as possible.
It also seems that many people were surprised to discover that a Spanish mangaka like myself would take on the challenge of drawing a historical manga depicting old Japan. But the truth is that I've loved stories about the Edo period and historical Japan for a long time. I've always enjoyed manga, movies, and TV series set in the past, and drawing a manga like this has been one of my goals for years. Now, I just hope readers will support our series so I can continue drawing these characters and exploring this fascinating period of Japanese history for a long time!
As for some behind-the-scenes details, I first started discussing this series with my Manga ONE editor back in January, and I drew my first character designs in March. So this project has been a long time coming! Character design was challenging, as it usually is when starting a new series, and it took us about four months to get everything approved. However, I think it was time well spent. I especially love the main character's design. He's a lot of fun to draw!
After that, we spent a great deal of time gathering reference materials for the series. We've bought books, visited libraries, and searched extensively online. Even now that the serialization is underway, we're planning a research trip to a museum dedicated to Kōdayū Daikokuya and his story, located in Suzuka, Mie Prefecture. I'm really looking forward to that trip!
And now, finally, ten months after my editor and I first started discussing the possibility of working on a new series, the first chapter was released just a few days ago!
Looking back, I realize that I've spent most of this year working on this manga, and honestly, it feels like it's been a long journey. Keeping the project a secret was quite challenging, too. Quite a few people have asked me over the past several months what I've been working on, and even when I wanted to show them what I was drawing, I simply couldn't!
But now, the time has finally come to show everyone what Matsuda-san, our editor, my assistants, and I have been working so hard on over the past few months.

ついに、僕の新しい漫画の連載が始まりました！タイトルは『極北天獄～Escape from the Far North～』です。作画を僕が担当し、松田浩太さんがストーリーを担当しています。小学館の漫画アプリ「マンガワン」で連載中です。

読者の皆さんのコメントをいくつか読んでみると、この物語が江戸時代に実際に存在した人物や、実際に起きた出来事をもとにしていることを、すでにご存じの方も多いようです。物語の概要はネットで調べれば出てくると思いますが、ネタバレを避けたい方は、主人公の名前を検索しないことをおすすめします！
もちろん、物語の世界をできるだけ正確に描くために、これまでたくさんの調査をしてきました。とはいえ、きっと間違えてしまう部分もあると思うので、歴史的な間違いに気づいたときは、どうか大目に見ていただけると嬉しいです。松田さん、担当編集者さん、アシスタントの皆さん、そして僕自身も、毎話、江戸時代の様子をできるだけ忠実に再現できるよう、ネットで画像や情報を探し続けています。
また、スペイン人漫画家である僕が、昔の日本を描く歴史漫画に挑戦していることに驚いた方も多いようです。でも実は、僕はずっと前から江戸時代や昔の日本を舞台にした物語が大好きでした。昔の時代を舞台にした漫画や映画、テレビドラマなどをいつも楽しんできましたし、こういう漫画を描くことは長年の目標のひとつでした。これから読者の皆さんに作品を応援していただき、この魅力的な時代を舞台に、できるだけ長くキャラクターたちを描き続けられたらいいなと思っています！
ここからは、制作の裏話を少し紹介したいと思います。マンガワンの担当編集者さんとこの作品について最初に話し始めたのは今年の1月で、最初のキャラクターデザインを描いたのは3月でした。つまり、かなり長い時間をかけて準備してきた企画なんです！
新しい作品のキャラクターデザインは、いつものことながらなかなか大変でした。最終的にOKをいただくまでに約4か月かかりましたが、今振り返ると、その時間は無駄ではなかったと思います。特に主人公のデザインが気に入っています。描いていて本当に楽しいキャラクターです！
その後は、作品の参考資料を集めるためにかなりの時間を費やしました。本を購入したり、図書館に行ったり、ネットで徹底的に調べたりしました。そして連載が始まった今でも、名古屋市の近くにある、大黒屋光太夫と彼の物語を紹介する記念館への取材旅行を計画しています。今からその旅行がとても楽しみです！
そしてついに、担当編集者さんと新しい連載について話し始めてから10か月、数日前に第1話が公開されました！
振り返ってみると、今年はそのほとんどの時間をこの作品の制作に費やしてきたことになります。正直、ここまで来るのに長い時間がかかったなと感じています。また、制作中の作品について秘密にしておくのも、なかなか大変でした。この数か月の間に、何人もの方から「今は何を描いているんですか？」と聞かれましたが、本当はそのとき描いていたものを見せたくても、残念ながらそれができませんでした！
でも、ようやくその時が来ました。松田さん、担当編集者さん、アシスタントの皆さん、そして僕が、この数か月間一生懸命取り組んできた作品を、皆さんにお見せできるようになりました。
